Capital allocation
Glossary version 2026-07-12.v1 · reviewed July 12, 2026
Management’s decisions about where company cash and financing go: reinvestment, acquisitions, debt repayment, dividends, or share buybacks. Good allocation directs capital toward the highest risk-adjusted return.
Capital allocation is the process of choosing among internal investment, acquisitions, balance-sheet repair, dividends, and buybacks. The decision should reflect expected returns, financial risk, and the price of the company’s own shares. Reports judge the record using incremental returns on capital, dilution, acquisition outcomes, leverage, and whether distributions were funded sustainably.
